ClimateScaping plant and yard experts will come do a yard assessment for you and give you tips, tricks, solutions, and assistance in all the below areas. Let us share our wisdom with you!
Weeds: The Unwanted Guests
Weeds are the garden's uninvited guests. They show up, take over, and leave you frustrated. And though they can bear pretty flowers…they can be so deceiving! We want to arm you with some knowledge here so you won’t be fooled by them. So we brought in our plant guru to help!:
Canada Thistle
Don’t let this pretty in pink flower kid you…it’s an invasive menace,
What does our botanist Chris Ansari have to say:
“That’s correct, Canada Thistle can spread faster than you know. Each plant can produce 1,000 to 1,500 seeds and like a dandelion needs only one thing to ruin your yard and your neighborhood - wind. It chokes out your beloved plants as one of the bullies in the plant world!“
Bindweed
This persistent vine is a tough one to eradicate. It wraps itself around plants and can quickly overrun your garden. Bindweed is the clingy ex that just won't leave you alone!
What does our botanist Chris Ansari have to say:
“Bindweed is one of the most challenging weeds to eradicate. Did you know the seeds can survive in the soil for up to 40 years!”
Dandelions
Dandelions are more than just a yellow flower. While they have medicinal uses and we ‘should want to love them’, we don’t. Their seeds can wreak havoc, spreading everywhere and ruining the look of your lawn, your neighbor’s lawn, your other neighbor’s lawn, and your other neighbor’s lawn. Dandelions: the uninvited party crashers of the plant world, at least aesthetically!
What does our botanist Chris Ansari have to say:
“Dandelions are masters of survival. They can take root in places that seem a little short of miraculous, and then are impossible to get rid of, as homeowners have found. But why is this plant so hard to kill? It’s because they are fast growers. The sunny yellow flowers go from bud to seed in days. Their lifespan is long, too – an individual plant can live for years, so the dandelion lurking in a corner of the playground might be older than the children running past it. The roots sink in deeper over the years, and can go down 15 feet. Like the Hydra who sprouted two new heads for every one that was cut off, the roots clone when divided; a one-inch bit of dandelion root can grow a whole new dandelion. Dandelion leaves can shove their way through gravel and cement, and thrive in barren habitats. You have to be very strategic to get rid of these suckers.”
Rumex
Getting rid of Rumex can feel like an endless battle. Its deep roots make it a formidable opponent in the weed world. This one's the underground rebel with a cause (to take over your yard)!
What does our botanist Chris Ansari have to say:
“Did you know each plant is capable of producing thousands of seeds and can easily be distributed because the seeds have little wings on them. The seeds can survive in the soil for up to 80 years and plants produce an average of 30,000 seeds per year!”
White Top (Hoary Cress)
Another invasive species, White Top, can quickly take over, leaving little room for your desired plants to thrive. Think of White Top as the sneaky ninja of weeds—swift and silent but oh-so-destructive.
What does our botanist Chris Ansari have to say:
“This pesky plant thrives in disturbed areas to include: fields, waste places, meadows, pastures, croplands and along roadsides, or right next door in my neighbor’s yard - seriously. It is typically found on unshaded, generally open areas of disturbed ground.”
Bugs: The Tiny Terrors
Bugs might be small, but their impact can be enormous. Here are a few that might be bugging you:
Wasps
These buzzing pollinators can unfortunately be a little scary nuisance, especially when you're trying to enjoy a peaceful outdoor moment. Please don’t kill them, there are so many other organic ways to deter them away from your space.
Japanese Beetles
Ok, we condone killing these (just please do so organically)! In Colorado, Japanese Beetles love to feast on Roses and fruit trees, raspberry, blackberry, grapevines, Elms, Birch, Lindens, Maples, and turfgrass and they LEAF a trail of absolute destruction in their wake. These beetles are the gourmet food critics of your garden, but they don't just review—they decimate!
Aphids
These tiny disgusting pests can cause big problems by sucking the life out of your plants and spreading disease. Aphids are the vampires of the insect world—tiny, but their bite packs a punch! Again, lots of fun ways to get rid of these yucky monsters from your trees, food gardens and flowers that are totally organic.
Lawn: The Green Canvas
A lush, green lawn is the pride of any yard, but several issues can turn it into a patchy, brown mess:
Brown Spots and Wilting
Brown spots and wilting can be signs of various issues, from overwatering to pests. It's like your lawn is sending out an S.O.S.! Let our yard consultants at ClimateScaping help you figure out the problem and then provide you with an organic solution.
Sprinkler Coverage and Water Waste
Poor sprinkler coverage and midday watering can waste water and leave your lawn thirsty and even burned. We should be watering lawns deeply and infrequently (25 min twice a week) and only in the dark hours (3-6am is perfect). This way the sun doesn’t scorch newly watered grass, or there’s the pesky little thing called ‘evaporation’ that really ruins everything.
Puppy Pee Spots
Oh Fido! Our adorable little pets can leave unsightly large spots on your lawn with their potty breaks. Puppy pee spots are like love letters from your furry friend—but your lawn isn't feeling it let me tell ya! Yes, there are ways to fix this…without sending Fido to puppy no-pee bootcamp.
Aspens: The Beautiful but Unfortunately Problematic Giants
Aspens are a beloved and graceful, historic feature in our landscapes…we LOVE them., But in residential yards they come with their own set of challenges:
Diseases and Short Lifespan
Aspens are susceptible to diseases and have a relatively short lifespan of around 20 years. These trees are like the rock stars of the plant world—beautiful, but their time in the spotlight is brief.
Suckers
Aspen suckers can pop up everywhere, turning your yard into a forest. Aspens are like the social butterflies of the plant world—they bring all their friends along! We can’t tell you how many of our clients come to us with ‘how’ to deal with unwanted aspen suckers. Yes, you can do it without hurting these majestic trees.
Animals: The Cute but Destructive Herbivores
Bambi can certainly add mega-charm to your yard, but sometimes you wish they’d just stay in your neighbor’s yard and not yours. Am I right or am I right!? Having problems with deer or any of the others below - email us, let us help.
Bunnies, Deer, Voles, and Groundhogs
These adorable animals can munch on your plants, roots, dig up your yard, and create chaos. Think of these critters as the mischievous toddlers of the animal kingdom—cute but capable of causing serious trouble! We can help you put up some organic barriers to these bummer critters. There are so many different options to choose from, where our yard consultants come in is by doing a site analysis of what is happening in your particular yard and ecosystem. From there we can make a myriad of suggestions to fix these problems without hurting anyone or anything in our beautiful environment.
Tell you what, email us at info@climatescaping.com and give us a sentence about your problems from above…or you can just say “all of the above” and we’ll schedule a site visit with our plant and landscape professionals to come out and talk about truly organic options and solutions that you can be proud of.
Water Bill: The Sneaky Expense
A high water bill during the summer can be a real shocker. We have a client who just paid $680! Oh my! Here are some common causes for what is spiking those bills out of the blue:
Leaks and Wasted Water
Underground leaks and improper watering techniques can lead to wasted water and higher bills. It's like money slipping through your fingers! Our ClimateScaping CEO woke up on a Saturday morning to find 80 gallons of water in her yard…all because a dripline feeding her trees broke underground. This happens. She was lucky to see it, sometimes it leaks and we don’t even know it’s happening until we see the bill. ClimateScaping knows how to look for the problem!
Driplines
Improperly set up driplines can waste water and reduce efficiency. Your driplines need to be on point, or it's like throwing water into the wind! So many landscapers make mistakes with irrigation. There are right and wrong ways here…there are also unknowns, mistakes, and oopsies.
