Are you ready to transform your yard into a low-maintenance, water-wise haven? ColoradoScaping is an excellent way to save water, reduce upkeep, and create a beautiful, sustainable outdoor space. But before you dive into planting drought-tolerant plants, proper preparation is key. Follow these steps to get your yard ready for a successful ColoradoScaping project.

Step 1: Evaluate Your Current Landscape

Begin by assessing your yard’s existing conditions. Take note of:

  • Sunlight and Shade Patterns: Observe how sunlight moves across your yard throughout the day. Identify areas that receive full sun, partial shade, or are completely shaded.

  • Soil Type and Quality: Conduct a soil test to determine if your soil is sandy, clay-based, or loamy. This will help you choose the right plants and decide if soil amendments are necessary. You can do this through the CSU Extension Office.

  • Water Drainage: Check how water flows in your yard after rain. Identify areas where water tends to pool or runoff occurs. This can either help or harm your plants.

Step 2: Plan Your Design

A thoughtful design is the cornerstone of a successful ColoradoScaping. Consider:

  • Zoning by Water Needs: Group plants with similar water requirements together to simplify irrigation.

  • Paths and Hardscapes: Plan walkways, patios, and mulch areas to reduce water-thirsty turf. Use permeable materials like gravel or pavers to support water conservation.

  • Plant Selection: Choose native and drought-tolerant plants that thrive in your region’s climate. Incorporate a mix of grasses, shrubs, and flowering plants for variety and year-round interest.

Step 3: Remove Existing Turf

Lawns can be water-intensive, so replacing them with ColroadoScape-friendly alternatives is essential. Here are some ways to remove turf:

  • Sheet Mulching: Lay down cardboard or newspaper over the grass and cover it with mulch. Over time, the grass will decompose, enriching the soil.

  • Solarization: Cover the lawn with clear plastic during hot months to kill grass and weeds.

  • Manual or Mechanical Removal: Dig up the turf using hand tools or a sod cutter.

Step 4: Improve Your Soil

While many drought-tolerant plants thrive in poor soils, some soil improvement may still be beneficial. Mix in organic matter like compost to increase water retention in sandy soils or improve drainage in clay-heavy areas.

Step 5: Install Efficient Irrigation

ColoradoScaping doesn’t mean no water—it means watering wisely. Drip irrigation systems and soaker hoses are efficient ways to deliver water directly to plant roots. Use a timer to ensure watering happens during cooler times of the day, such as early morning or late evening.

Step 6: Apply Mulch

A thick layer of mulch (2-4 inches) around your plants helps retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and reduce weed growth. Organic mulches like wood chips or bark are excellent choices, but gravel or decorative rock can also work well in ColoradoScaping designs.

Step 7: Begin Planting

Plant during the cooler seasons, and the cooler times of day, such as early spring or fall, or in the early morning or later evening in the hotter months. This helps reduce stress on new plants. Arrange plants according to your design plan, ensuring adequate spacing for growth and airflow.

Step 8: Maintain Your ColoradoScape

Once established, ColoradoScapes can be minimal upkeep if done correctly. Regular tasks include:

  • Weeding: Remove weeds to reduce competition for water and nutrients.

  • Pruning: Trim plants to maintain their shape and health.

  • Monitoring Irrigation: Adjust watering schedules based on seasonal changes, and the age of the plant (the older they are, the less water they need).

By preparing your yard with these steps, you’ll set the stage for a thriving ColoradoScapes that’s not only eco-friendly but also stunning. Start small, take your time, and enjoy watching your yard evolve into a beautiful, sustainable space.
